In a furnace, the heat exchanger is a chamber or series of tubes that carries combustion gasses through a plenum, where a home's interior air is circulated over the piping. When the heat exchanger wears out, or corrodes, combustion gasses, including Carbon Monoxide, can enter the interior of the home. Older heating units should have the heat exchanger checked visually by a licensed HVAC company.
